Ambassador: Jody Abssy Who Am I? I represent the San Diego Watercolor Society founded in 1965 to promote, display, and teach watercolor media. It has 700 plus members and is a classic “old growth forest” looking for ways to let the light in. I also represent the San Diego Museum of Art Artists Guild that has a venerable tradition. We founded the museum and continue to support its place in our culture. I am also a docent trainee at the Mingei International Museum. I am part of a group of feisty and well-connected women who serve as board members and trustees at art institutions in San Diego and in Los Angeles. I have unofficial but very close personal ties with the Inner-City Arts program in LA. Why I Think 20UNDER40 is Important: Everyone I spoke with at the August 16th 20UNDER40 presentation in San Diego could picture their institution as a silo… storing and preserving something precious needed by the community and fearful of losing itself if it poured its contents out without careful thought… not knowing how to move ahead. The ideas of an “open field” image and the concept of “multi-layered mentoring” discussed in the anthology resonated and left people wanting to hear more. It gave them the ability to visualize their own situation… a tremendous gift. What I’ll Do to Promote the Anthology: I have access to those who affect change in SDWS, SDMAAG, MIM and the Inner-City Arts. I will promote 20UNDER40 by continuing personal and public discussions of the ideas therein at board meetings and in committee work. I will get on the agenda regularly as someone looking into the future and ready to share my source with them. I will encourage them to be part of the 20UNDER40 universe by buying and reading the newest thinking relative to their needs. |
